About this food: Theobromine. Dark/baking chocolate is ~5x worse than milk chocolate.
Disclaimer: estimates only. Toxic doses vary by individual pet, breed, and food preparation. When in doubt, call poison control or your vet.
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator compares the dose (food weight ÷ pet weight) against published toxic thresholds from veterinary sources including the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the Merck Veterinary Manual, and VCA Hospitals. Real-world toxicity varies by individual pet sensitivity, the exact food preparation (e.g. cocoa percentage in chocolate), and existing health conditions.
What to do at each risk level
- Low risk: Watch for unusual behavior, vomiting, or diarrhea over 24 hours. Call vet if anything appears.
- Monitor: Call ASPCA Poison Control or your vet for guidance. Note exact amount and time of ingestion.
- Moderate / Severe: Go to the emergency vet immediately. Don't induce vomiting unless instructed.
